Hybrid Structure using DELTABEAM® Green with CLT Reaches Net Zero Target

Fife College is part of the 58-acre Dunfermline Learning Campus and was completed in 2025. The Scottish Government aim is to not only meet the net zero goals but to exceed them by delivering reductions in operational carbon after completion. To this end the building uses a unique steel and timber construction.

The design was focused on the reduction of embodied carbon associated with the building superstructure and is acting as a pathfinder project within the new Net Zero Public Sector Building Standards for Scotland (NZPSBSS). The main teaching building has been the fulcrum of this effort, with the teaching spaces set out around a visually striking atrium. Driven by the Architectural grid, the design incorporates 7.2m spanning cross laminated timber (CLT) planks resting on slim-floor Peikko DELTABEAM® Composite Beams spanning 14.4m. This structural arrangement provides a flat exposed CLT soffit, whilst also delivering flexible internal teaching spaces for the college.

To further help meet the environmental targets DELTABEAM® Green was the variant chosen. Technically identical to the standard beam, it is manufactured from a minimum of 90% recycled material.

Fife College’s new Dunfermline Campus will feature industry-standard workshops for engineering and construction, a university hub so learners can study to degree level with a range of university partners on campus, a purpose-built learning café, sports hall, and an innovation and events hub to cater for different College and community events.

In addition to indoor facilities, the campus will also be fully equipped with brand new outdoor facilities, including a multi-use outdoor sports area, an external terrace, outdoor spaces for our childcare courses, external dining areas for the hospitality students, covered outdoor workshop areas for built environment courses and a range of outdoor teaching and gathering areas.

By implementing these sustainability measures, such as the CLT/DELTABEAM®/steel hybrid construction design, we are very confident that this building, which is an ambitious building and an ambitious architectural design, can hit Scottish government carbon targets.
