School completed on time within 9 months thanks to precast concrete and composite structures with DELTABEAM® and column connections

The opening of the newest St. George's School in Munich reflects the success of the concept and the need for foreign language education in Germany. This success is also based on the vision of the founders to make sure that children enjoy school.

The British International School in Munich was built on a former industrial site by project developer DIBAG. It is a four-storey building with a courtyard, various roof terraces and underground car park. A total of 570 pupils are taught here by 90 teachers. All classes are taught at the school and in the day care center. For the cosmopolitan city of Munich, in which almost thirty percent of the inhabitants are foreign language speakers and global corporations such as Siemens and BMW are located, an international school is a necessity. Nevertheless, the granting of the building permit was delayed because there were protected areas on the site. The building permit was not granted until immediately before the start of construction in January 2017, but the school had to be ready for the beginning of the school year in September - a major challenge for all those involved in the project.

Due to the short construction time available, the building was designed in precast concrete. The contractor chose Peikko's bolted connections the columns and DELTABEAM® for the slim floor structures, as they already knew the reliability and speed of these products from other projects. One of the biggest advantages of the structural system in this case is that the columns can be loaded immediately after assembly, so that the DELTABEAM® could be installed directly after the columns.

The hollow-core slabs didn't need support during assembly and shortened the construction period. A further challenge was posed by the necessary building expansion joints. For this purpose the beams were equipped with shear keys on the head plates of the beams with a stainless steel slide bearing on which the beam shoe of the second beam rests. Thus the expansions of the building can also be absorbed.

A standard detail was the connection of the composite beams to the columns in the outer walls. KPG corbels from Peikko were used here. For the ceiling above the 3rd floor, special solutions were used for a 20 cm ceiling offset. For the lateral beam connections a special solution was deveoped and could be implemented easily.
